Statistical Section AARI,Faisalabad

Statistical Section is playing an important role in Agricultural Research. Appropriate designs are suggested to Agricultural Scientists keeping in view the No. of factors, the objectives of the experiments, area and experimental material available. The data of research experiments are subjected to analysis by applying suitable statistical techniques. The results arrived at, are conveyed to the research officers concerned with statistical interpretation. Various research disciplines are evolving crop varieties and introducing new technologies and this section is equally contributing to these developments by providing them statistical services.

Mission & Objectives

• Statistical Section, in collaboration with agri. scientists, aims to achieve the highest standards in agricultural research that is being conducted under different institutes of Ayub Agricultural Research Institutes, Faisalabad. The main objectives of the section can be classified as under:- 

• Designing the layout of field and laboratory experiments conducted at Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad and Research Stations attached to it in all over the Punjab.

• Physical verification of layout of experiments conducted at Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad and other Research Stations attached to it in the Punjab.

• Statistical analysis of data of research experiments and interpretation of results.

• Vetting of Annual Research Program of work of all the Research Institutes under aegis of Ayub Agricultural Research Institute.

• Maintenance of the data regarding area, production and yield of different crops.

• Training of Research Scientists of Ayub Agricultural Research Institute on data analysis and interpretation of results

Training of Research Scientists

One of the thrust areas of this section is to develop trained scientists in AARI in the disciplines of Agricultural Statistics for meeting the challenges of Agricultural Research. Trainings are being conducted on monthly basis for agri. researchers to enhance statistical aptitude and necessary understanding of design of experiments and interpretation of results to make them able to cope with the practical difficulties faced during experimentation. The course covers the fields Design of Experiments, Regression Analysis, Multivariate Techniques etc. and lays more emphasis on statistical computing using different statistical Software.

Following are the achievements of the section:

Physical Verification of Layout of Field Experiments

The layout of field experiments was physically checked by paying visits to the experimental areas of different Directorates/Sections at Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad. The difficulties, faced by the researchers were discussed in detail and suitable solutions were suggested at the spot. Various points of mutual interest pertaining to the number of replications, shape and size of plot/block were also discussed.

Statistical Analysis of data and Interpretation of Results

All the data of research experiments received in the section was carefully examined, compiled, evaluated and analyzed statistically. Variance of the data was split up into various components and test of significance applied between means of treatments. Possible existence of interaction between various factors in the experiments was also studied. The results drawn there-from, were discussed with the research scientists and specialists concerned and then conveyed to the respective Institute / Section.

Vetting of Annual Program of Research Work

Annual Program of Research Work for Rabi and Kharif of all the disciplines of Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad is being vetted on continuous basis, and improvements / modifications regarding statistical point of view are being suggested where deemed necessary

Services

This section extends help to improve the efficiency of the research work by streamlining the statistical practices to internationally recommended practices which, along with the reduction in experimentation cost, also result in more reliable and valid inferences leading to the better future estimates and policy making and hence for prosperous Pakistan.

Advisory Services for Designing and Layout of Research Experiments

Various research disciplines are evolving crop varieties and introducing new technologies The basic and the most important consideration for an experimenter is the choice of suitable design of experiment which results not only in efficient usage of resources but also increases the precision of the estimates by minimizing experimental error. This section is equally contributing to these developments by providing statistical services to the research scientists of AARI. The data of different crops regarding area, production and yield maintained by this section, were also provided the researchers to facilitate them in writing research papers, articles etc.
