Main Library & IT Department, AARI, Faisalabad

At the time of establishment of Ayub Agricultural Research Institute Lyallpur, (now Faisalabad) in the year 1962, the Library was established in small shed constructed for seed drying. Later on the same shifted to the top floor of the Administration Block of the Institute. The construction of new building of the library was completed in 1989 and library shifted to new building in 1990. AARI supports its research initiatives through a state-of-the-art Library and Information Resource Centre. It is an indispensable source of information and is one of well-stocked agriculture libraries of Pakistan. AARI Main Library actively supports research and is committed to the dissemination of knowledge and improvement in the intellectual content of its patrons. Its collection is a blend of books, laboratory manuals, research articles, journals, and digital databases. The Main Library is Hybrid Library which contains both digital and print collection. AARI In-House Digital Library contains more than 170,000 Books, Laboratory manuals, research articles and other materials which is one of the biggest Digital Library of Pakistan.

The Library in print format is stocked with 50,000 books, journals and other materials on subjects of interest including Plant Breeding and Genetics, Botany, Bio-Chemistry, Plant Pathology, Plant Physiology, Bio Technology, Entomology, Food Technology, Crop Management, Horticulture, Floriculture, Dairy, Government publications, Gazette, Dictionaries & Encyclopedia, Economics, Statistics, Library& Information Sciences, English Literature, Pakistan affairs, Islam etc. The books have been classified using Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme (DDC). Main Library is playing vital role in research support activities. The effective practices of acquisition, organization and dissemination of information have been highly valuable in extension of services to the researchers. We strengthen our repository of resources to provide access to wide-range of research materials. Library cultivates the atmosphere of research and development and explores it to the uttermost by escalating the AARI community’s awareness of research work and its relevance.

Objectives 

• To provide convenient and equitable access to information resources for all researchers of AARI to enhance the quality of research.
• To disseminate knowledge through electronic sources on their desk.
• To build a sustainable and scalable digital knowledge infrastructure
• To improve online learning environments.

Achievments

• Acquired Access to HEC National Digital Library (http://www.digitallibrary.edu.pk/Ayub.html)
• In-House Digital Library more than 200,000  Books; Research Papers and other materials which is one of the biggest Digital Library of Pakistan searchable through local OPAC (http://192.168.3.100:8080/)
• Agriculture literatures have been sent to the all Directorates &Researchers individually through E-mail on daily basis and their queries also entertained. We sent more than 70,000 E- Books, laboratory manuals, research articles and other materials via mail since 2011
• Maintained the Display & Reading Hall with latest literature available here for the patrons
• Completed the Automation of the Library
• Facebook Page of AARI which contains all news, interviews and latest research innovations regarding agriculture worldwide
• Introduced Digitization System
• Promoted the Library Services through social media, book fairs and awareness seminars.

The library provides instructional programms to maximize the use of library resources and services. It includes orientation programmes, hands on training, workshops and seminars on various instructional and research tools like Endnote, SPSS, and searching techniques to use the different electronic databases. Electronic Document Delivery Service

Abstracting and Indexing (A&I) services provide one location for researchers in Main Library to search for articles in a subject. They present abstracts of articles and link through to the publishers’ websites for the full text of the article. Journals should be included in the major A&I indexes for their subjects to provide wider reach to researchers and more points of access to the articles hence driving up readership and citations.

Information Literacy Programs and Training

To promote technical information dissemination through social media, book fairs, and celebrations of World Book Day and awareness seminars were arranged in the Main Library Seminar Hall. To promote use of library resources and services, orientation programs, i.e. hands on training and workshops on various instructional and research tools like Library Information Management System, ICT, Endnote, SPSS, Plagiarism, and searching techniques were arranged to use different electronic databases. In specific to this project Senior Librarian conducted trainings on “Role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Library Management in Digital Era’’ to familiarize the Scientists (531) about managing their information in current era of digital world.
