Project objectives
- Improve productivity of irrigation water through efficient conveyance and effective farm-level use by adopting water conservation techniques.
- Strengthen the capacity and sustainability of the private sector in delivering services to support irrigated agriculture.
- Build the capacity of stakeholders in better management of irrigation water to achieve higher crop yields with reduced production costs.
- Contribute to increase water productivity, agricultural production, higher incomes for farmers, more employment opportunities in rural areas, improved living standards for farmers, and positive environmental outcomes.
Key Components
The major activities under the NPIW-II project include the following:
Watercourse Improvement:
- Improvement of 2,500 unimproved watercourses up to 50% of the total length to enhance conveyance efficiency.
- The additional lining of 7,500 partially improved watercourses up to 50% of their length to maximize the potential of watercourse improvement.
LASER Land Leveling:
- Provision of 9,500 LASER land levelers to farmers and service providers to strengthen LASER land leveling services in the private sector.
On-Farm Water Storage:
- Construction of 3,000 on-farm water storage ponds in irrigated areas for storing excess canal and rainwater to provide supplemental irrigation.

Farmer Share: 3,983.867 Million PKR
Gestation Period: Five Years (2019 - 20 to 2023 - 24)
Targets
The activities / targets of the project are as follows:
- Provision of agriculture implements / machinery to farmers on 50% subsidy for promotion of mechanized / drill sowing and timely sowing of wheat, 4,007 Zero Tillage Drills / Happy Seeders, 6,680 Dry Sowing Drills/Shallow Drills, 2374 Wattar Sowing Drills/Rabi Drills, 1187 Wheat Bed Planters and 1187 Rotary Slashers, will be given to farmers on 50% subsidy
- Provision of 216,457 ton of Certified and treated wheat seed of Rust tolerant wheat varieties on subsidized rates
- Provision of wheat weedicide packs to farmers on subsidized rates, for weed control on 11.840 million acres
- To showcase Good Agricultural Practices through laying out of 25,000 Demonstration Plots at Farmers’ Field
- Holding of 300 Mega / Smart Farmer Gathering
- Publicity through print and electronic media

Total Cost: Rs. 9988.388 Million (Punjab Share: Rs. 4830.760 Million, Federal Share: Rs. 1497.000 Million, Farmers’ Share: Rs. 3660.628 Million)

Targets
This following targets are to be achieved on the completion of this project:
- Provision of following Agricultural Machinery/Implements on 50% cost sharing basis:
- Riding type Transplanters (450 Nos.)
- Walk-after type Transplanters (250 Nos.)
- Nursery Raising Machines (450 Nos.)
- Direct Seeding Rice Drills (900 Nos.)
- Water Tight Rotavator (800 Nos.)
- Rice Straw Chopper and Disc Plow/MB Plow Sets (750 Nos.)
- Knapsack Power Sprayer (2450 Nos.)
- Provision of Certified Seed on 50% cost sharing basis (229,285 Mounds)
- Establishment of Demonstration Plots for showcasing (3,625 Nos.)
- Provision of Financial Assistance to farmers @ Rs.1500/Acre for promoting Paddy Specific Harvesters (453,518 acres)
- Provision of Weedicides on 30% cost sharing basis (725,200 acres)
- Mega Farmer’s gatherings by Punjab Govt. (180 Nos.)
- Provision of Micronutrients on 50% cost sharing basis (181,300 acres)
- Appreciation of best rice growers at district level and provincial level through Rice Yield Competition (240 Nos.)

Total Cost: 5114.999 Million
Gestation Period: Five Years (2019-20 to 2023 - 24)
Targets
The activities / targets of the project are:
- Provision of subsidy on Canola at Rs. 5000/acre
- Provision of subsidy on Sunflower at Rs. 5000/acre
- Provision of subsidy on Sesame at Rs. 2000/acre
- Laying out of Demonstration Plots of Canola Crop 30 numbers per year
- Laying out of Demonstration Plots of Sunflower Crop 30 numbers per year
- Laying out of Demonstration Plots of Sesame Crop 15 numbers per year
- Provision of oilseed related implements on a 50% cost-sharing basis
- Holding of Smart Farmers’ Gathering
- Publicity through print and electronic media
